In the wake of COP27 and the release of the last IPCC reports, which emphasize the urgency of the climate crisis, the role of philanthropy has yet to be defined. While climate and the environment still only represent around 2% of total philanthropic funding (Morena, 2016), the development of national coalitions of foundations for climate in Europe (for example, UK, France, Spain, Italy) as well as the creation of an “International Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change” have produced some movement in the sector, raising questions about the direction foundations will be taking. At the same time, climate philanthropy remains understudied within academic literature. This workshop aims at creating an exchange between practitioners and academics, addressing this important gap by examining the role research could have in the field of climate philanthropy.
