60 years ago, in October 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis brought the world to the brink of a nuclear war. President John F. Kennedy and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, who both bear some responsibility for the dangerous crisis, found a way to end the “thirteen days” peacefully and without losing face. And they learned crucial lessons, started to build trust, and worked on détente agreements. This workshop for students from LMU Munich consists of three elements: 1. Curating an exhibit on the Cuban Missile Crisis that will be shown at Amerikahaus Munich and in Berlin. 2. Working on and rehearsing a stage(d) reading that consists of primary sources from the time plus a multimedia presentation. 3. Creating social media content (e.g. a website and a Twitter newsfeed). Workshop seminars for students and support for young academics represent an important objective for the work of the Akademie in Tutzing.
